4 Common Things That End Up in Your Pool

Shenton Pumps • February 24, 2022

A pool can be a wonderful asset to have, use and enjoy on hot summer days. But while you may love to swim in your pool, you may get frustrated at the variety of items that end up in the water, especially when your pool is in constant use during the summer season. Discover four common things that can end up in your pool, as well as the ways you can prevent or get rid of these.

1. Leaves

Nearby trees, gusts of wind and summer rainstorms can drop leaves in your pool. While you might think that a few stray leaves will not hurt anything, they can harm your pool.

Mainly, too many leaves can affect the pH balance in your pool. A stable pH is necessary to keep your pool safe, but if you have too many leaves, they can clog your filter and make your pool look unused, unclean and unkempt.

So what do you do if you have more than a few leaves floating around or settling on your pool's bottom? The simple solution is to clean it regularly. You can often pluck leaves up out of the water with a pool skimmer or with your own hands. However, if you do not have time or patience to do this sometimes-monotonous task, pool cleaning experts can easily take out the leaves for you.

2. Bugs

Since a pool is a large pool of water, it will often attract bugs of all types. Besides the water boatmen and back swimmer bugs that can infest pools, you will also get bugs like mosquitos that will often simply die in the pool and leave a floating body behind.

To avoid the potential issues of bug infestation in your pool, such as algae, regular cleaning is usually necessary. You might also cover up your pool when you do not use it or put in certain chemicals. That way, you will not have to deal with the shock of seeing either live pests swimming or carcasses floating around.

3. Dirt

Dirt from storms, wind or people's feet can end up in your pool, often settling at the bottom or cluttering up your filter. Dirt not only can ruin your pool but make it look dirty.

If you want a beautiful pool and are tired of dirt clouding up its appearance, then things like regular cleaning and vacuuming, as well as pool covers or full filter replacements, can help.

4. Algae

Algae can form in a pool for many reasons. You might get algae from an influx of bugs, poor filtration or inconsistent maintenance. You might also not have treated it with chemicals enough or have a pH balance that is too high.

If you have algae floating in your water or stuck to your wall, then you can often get rid of it by balancing your pH, shocking your water or cleaning out your pool. If you are not sure how bad your algae is, then pool experts can often look over the pool and recommend treatment options. Algae can present as different colours, with green being the most common and black being the toughest to get rid of.

No matter what ends up in your pool, you can often avoid the issues that come along with pool debris with regular cleaning. Shenton Pumps can regularly clean, vacuum, scrub and service your pool, based on what the overall condition of your pool is and how often you use your pool.
