6 Reasons to Use a Pool Cover During the Summer

Tyler Vogelsberg • January 21, 2021

Pool covers are essential if you want to keep your pool free of debris during the cooler winter months. But a pool cover can also benefit you during the summer months too. With the right pool cover, you can save yourself time and money.

If you use your swimming pool a lot during summer, then a pool cover can benefit you in various ways.

1. Keep your pool clean and debris free

If you have trees and shrubs in close vicinity to your swimming pool, then debris can become a problem. This is because leaves and other debris from surrounding vegetation can put pressure on your filter. Filters that are clogged with debris can contribute to algae growth in a swimming pool.

To prevent debris such as leaves from entering your pool, purchase a mesh pool cover to keep debris out when you aren't using your pool.

2. Lower your water bill by reducing evaporation

During a hot summer, your swimming pool will lose more water to evaporation due to the extreme summer heat. The more water your pool loses, the more you will need to fill it back up again. This will increase your water bill.

When you aren't using your pool during the day, use a thermal pool cover to lower the rate of water evaporation. A thermal pool cover can also help to stop water loss during summer nights.

3. Lower your pool heating costs

Even during the summer, the lower temperature at night can cause a swimming pool to lose heat. This is a problem if you enjoy an early morning swim. A cold swimming pool is less enticing than a warm one, especially early in the morning.

Thermal pool covers excel at helping a pool to retain the heat of a hot summer's day. When you finish using your pool during the day, cover it with a thermal cover. Then your pool will retain much of its heat throughout the night.

4. Reduce the amount of chemicals you use

Foreign objects, especially organic material like leaves, can cause an imbalance in your pool water. The only way to restore that balance is to remove the debris and add more chemicals to your pool. This costs money in the long term. By using a cover to keep debris out of your pool when you aren't using it, you can keep debris out and save money on chemicals.

5. Prevent accidents from occurring

Some sturdy types of pool cover can also help to prevent accidents that might occur. For instance, when you aren't using your pool, a pool cover can provide some protection to passing pets and people. This is a useful benefit if you live with young children.

6. Reduce time spent on pool maintenance

You can add more than one pool cover to your swimming pool to cover more than one use. For instance, you can add both a thermal cover and a mesh cover. This will meet more than one need and thus reduce the need for constant pool maintenance. The thermal cover will reduce evaporation, and the mesh cover will stop debris from getting into the pool.

Because of that, you'll spend less time on maintenance jobs like adding chemicals and water and removing debris and dirt from your pool and its filters. This will give you more time to enjoy your pool during the summer months.

However, always make sure to remove whatever covers you have at least once a week. If the weather becomes too hot, the pool can also increase its heat and use more chlorine.
