Why Use a Sand Filter in Your Hotel's Pool?

Tyler Vogelsberg • August 3, 2020

Designing the right pool for your hotel isn't simply a question size and design. You also need to think about how the pool works and how you maintain it. For example, you are likely to need commercial pumps and filtration systems. It's vital that you keep your pool clean and warm for your guests.

If you aren't sure which kind of filtration system to use, then consider a sand filter. These systems have some useful benefits. How do they work and why should you use one? Read on to find out.

How do sand pool filters work?

As their name suggests, sand filters use sand to clean up pool water. This sand is rougher than beach sand and is sized to filter effectively based on your pool size and water quality.

This sand sits in a pressure filter vessel. Your pool pump pushes water into the filter where it initially sits on top of the sand. It then gradually seeps down through the sand particles.

As the water passes through the filter, the sand catches dirty and unwanted particles and traps them. The water leaves the particles behind as it moves through the system. Once it comes out at the other end, it should be completely clean and fresh again.

What are the advantages of installing a sand filtration system?

Every pool filtration system has advantages and disadvantages. As a commercial pool owner, you'll get some benefits from a sand-based system that make it easier for you to keep your pool in good shape.

Effective particle capture

The sand that goes into a filter is coarse and sharp. Its rough edges and texture enable it to catch all kinds of waste and particles from the pool water.

For example, this kind of filter can trap both large and small particles. Unlike some filtration systems that can only clean out large pieces of waste, like leaves and hair, sand also filters out smaller waste particles.

So, this kind of system can also deal with growths like algae, which sticks to the sand as the water passes through it. Larger particles that end up in the filter vessel can also help trap them. This gives you an effective and efficient clean.

Less maintenance work

In an ideal world, you want to spend as little time on pool maintenance as possible. While you want to keep your pool safe, hygienic and working well, you don't want this to be too much work.

Maintenance costs money, both in labour and resources. If you have to close down the pool to work on it, then your guests can't use it when they want, which won't make them happy.

Sand filter systems work nicely on their own — you don't have to do much work to keep things running smoothly. Some other systems, such as those that use cartridge filters, need regular cleaning. You'll also have to replace the cartridges periodically.

Sand lasts for longer in filtration systems. It does lose some of its rough edges eventually, at which point you need to replace it; however, this typically takes years.

You do need to clean the sand out periodically to remove its filtered debris, but this is usually a quick and easy process. You press a button to set the unit into backwash mode. It then runs in reverse and releases all its filtered material so you can get rid of it. This shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Choosing a robust filtration system for a commercial pool isn't as easy as choosing a filter for your pool at home. You have more complex needs here. For expert advice on suitable systems, contact Shenton Pumps.
